Bombers Hit Double Digits in Lopsided Win Over Lakers

By James Brohm
Sioux Lookout, ON – The Sioux Lookout Bombers continued their strong start to 2023 with their second win in as many nights over the Fort Frances Lakers. The Bombers were firing on all cylinders with a balanced, consistent attack through 60 minutes. All but three Bombers players would registered at least one point on the night.
Sioux Lookout took control of the game early registering shot after shot on Fort Frances starting goalie, Ryan Tanner. Owen Riffel would start the Bombers’ onslaught just under 2 minutes into the first frame. Kevin Bond countered for the Lakers shortly after but then the flood gates opened with Bombers goals from Lucas Trimarchi, Ty Bahm and Nolan Palmer. Braden Clarke scored his first Bombers goal at 15:07 and that would bring about a goaltending change for the Lakers. Owen Riffel scored his second of the night less than a minute later on Brenden Stroble who was fresh off the bench in relief.
Blake Burke scored his team-leading 15th of the campaign just 33 seconds into the second period. Owen Riffel completed his hattrick at 5:17. Tyler Tykolis-Casey scored his second in two nights for the Bombers. Ian Snooks fired a quick shot on a centering pass from the corner to beat Bombers’ goalie, Ethan Penner on the short side at 14:27. The Bombers headed to the dressing room up 9-2 after 40 minutes of play.
Ty Bahm opened up the scoring in the third period at the 7:38 mark. Dylan Wedward capitalized on the power play shortly after, but it was too little, too late as the Bombers kept up the pressure for the remainder of the game scoring three more times with markers from Mitchell Daines, Tegan Neuman and a hat trick goal by Ty Bahm.
The final score of 13-3 is the Bombers’ best goal differential to date and makes them the highest scoring team in the SIJHL. Official scoring counted a total of 82 shots faced by the Laker’s goaltenders and 28 shots on Ethan Penner in the Bombers’ net.
Fort Frances will host the first place Fighting Walleye on January 10th and the Bombers will face off against the North Stars in a two-game series at the Fort William Gardens January 13th and 14th.
